Active ageing and climate action through the involvement of senior citizens in nature conservation

Grey4Green is an Erasmus+ project that aims to promote active ageing and contribute to climate action through the involvement of senior citizens in nature conservation volunteering programs and through the capacity of personnel working in the third age sector to develop and implement such programs.

Empowering Senior Citizens for Environmental Volunteering Action: in January the first Multinational Exchange in Lousada
In January 2024, the municipality of Lousada, Portugal, will host the Senior Exchange program as part of the Grey4Green project. Seniors from Denmark, Portugal, and Iceland will engage in environmental and civic activities. Cultural immersion and community participation are integral, fostering cross-cultural understanding and friendships!

News from the Project

Seniors and climate issues – for the benefit of both: a pioneering initiative from Iceland
In response to the growing interest in nature conservation and climate change in Iceland, the government has launched the “Seniors and Climate Issues - For the Benefit of Both” project during the chairmanship of the Nordic Council of Ministers in 2023. This initiative reinforces the Grey4Green project’s message for seniors to engage in sustainability efforts, fostering collaboration across various seniors’ groups.
Active Ageing and Nature Conservation – The Second Grey4Green Training Course in Strasbourg
The second Learning, Teaching and Training Activity of the Grey4Green project was held in the last week of September 2023 in Strasbourg, where enthusiastic personnel from different countries participated in training activities enhancing their skills in senior volunteering initiatives.
Green sustainable habits - how do we get everyone on board?
In their daily effort of actively promoting green habits, Fo-Aarhus and other NGOs organised a seminar on the Green Step method, involving volunteers, educators, trainers, NGOs and citizens in Aarhus. This amazing event highlighted the urgency of sustainability efforts and, most importantly, linked them to the UN Sustainable Goals!

The elderly of Lousada have already started the plantation season!
The intergenerational initiative, held in December in the picturesque Mata de Vilar in Portugal, gathered senior volunteers and pupils from the Forest School of Lustosa in the planting of over 30 native trees to promote environmental stewardship and positive environmental impacts.
In December we celebrate the International Volunteer Day
On 5 of December each year, the world comes together to honour the spirit of selflessness and community that defines International Volunteer Day. Volunteering holds significant importance for seniors, offering a multitude of advantages that contribute to their well-being and overall quality of life.
